Screen International’s UK Stars of Tomorrow and behind the scenes looks at Under the Skin and 12 Years a Slave proved popular with readers.

As we edge toward the finish line of another eventful year in the film industry, Team Screen has taken a look back at the most-read features on ScreenDaily.com over the past 12 months.

Topping the list was our annual UK Stars of Tomorrow line-up, profiling rising actors, writers, directors, producers and heads of department, proving the industry is keeping its eye on fresh, upcoming talent.

In-depth case studies on Jonathan Glazer’s haunting sci-fi Under the Skin (also see our Top 10 films of 2014) and Steve McQueen’s Oscar-winning 12 Years A Slave also proved among the most read features.

An interview with the founder of Secret Cinema and its production based around The Grand Budapest Hotel drew significant interest as did our examination of the French film industry and how it faced a challenging year.

In the run-up to the major awards ceremonies, features to generate major traffic so far include an interview with Eddie Redmayne, who plays Professor Stephen Hawking in The Theory of Everything, and an analysis of the potential contenders for the Best Picture Oscar. Other ‘awards’ features will pick up further steam as buzz increases around titles in the coming months.

Other features that proved popular included a look at genre cinema, an interview with The Raid 2 director Gareth Evans and a focus on the Tokyo International Film Festival.

2014년 상위권 영화 10편

다사다난했던 올해 영화산업의 결승선을 향해 다가감에 따라, '팀 스크린'은 지난 12개월동안 ScreenDaily.com에서 독자들이 가장 많이 읽은 영화기사를 돌아보았다.

상위권을 차지한 영화들은 매해 장래에 언급되는 UK 스타들이자, 신예 배우와 작가, 감독, 제작자와 책임자의 정보를 수집하는 일이었으며, 영화산업을 증명하는 것은 새로운 시각을 계속 유지하는 일인 동시에 곧 다가올 재능있는 신예들이다.

조나단 글레이저의 아름답고 슬픈 SF작 '언더 더 스킨'과 스티브 맥퀸의 오스카 수상작 '노예 12년'도  독자들이 가장 많이 읽은 영화기사 가운데 하나였다.  

 "그랜드 부다페스트 호텔" 등을 제작한 프로덕션인 시크릿 시네마의 창립자와의 인터뷰는 프랑스 영화 실험에 두드러진 흥미를 끌었으며, 프랑스 영화산업이 어떻게 도전적인 해에 직면했는지를 보여주었다.

주요 영화제를 위한 준비에 앞서, 많은 트래픽을 생산한 영화기사들은  "사랑에 대한 모든 것"에서 스티븐 호킹 교수를 연기한  에디 레드메인과의 인터뷰와 오스카 베스트 영화상에 도전할 가능성이 큰 작품들에 대한 분석들을 어느 정도 포함하고 있다.

 

 

The hunt for Best Picture

The best picture nominations race is on the final lap. Jeremy Kay analyses the contenders.

As awards season hurtles towards the January 8 Oscar nominations voting deadline, several elements in one of the widest Best Picture races in years are coming into focus.

Boyhood and The Theory Of Everything remain the ones to beat, while Gone Girl, The Grand Budapest Hotel, Interstellar and Inherent Vice are, despite pockets of support, by no means guaranteed to make the cut.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voters can select anywhere from five to 10 nominations. They have opted for nine in the past three years; however, given the nature of the field, I would not be surprised if we see a return to the full 10.

The December 8 announcement of the AFI Awards offered a timely framework of contenders as the institution feted its 11 favourite films of 2014. IFC Films’ Boyhood was there, of course, alongside American Sniper, Birdman, Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game, Interstellar, Into The Woods, Nightcrawler, Selma, Unbroken and Whiplash.

The Theory Of Everything was excluded from the AFI selection as it is a non-US production, although the Working Title drama will surely be a standout for Oscar voters. I would be stunned if this film and Boyhood do not make it on to the list when the Oscar nods are unveiled on January 15. Both deliver beautifully acted, profound cinema.

For my money, those are two of the four best English-language films this season, the others being Gone Girl and Whiplash.

Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash from Bold Films, released in the US through SPC, is worthy of anybody’s list. In addition to its intrinsic merits, the Academy likes to make magnanimous gestures of support towards emerging US talent (remember Benh Zeitlin’s Beasts Of The Southern Wild?). It should make the cut.

And Gone Girl? Hold on to that thought.

Of the other likely nomination contenders, Black Bear Pictures and The Weinstein Company’s The Imitation Game is a slam-dunk given its innately Oscar feel, strong reception, Harvey Weinstein factor and presence of Benedict Cumberbatch in the lead.

베스트 영화 후보작들의 경쟁이 막바지에 이르렀다. 제러미 케이가 경쟁작들에 대해 분석해보았다.

영화제 시즌이 1월 8일에 있을 오스카 영화제의 후보작 투표 마감일을 향해 돌진하고 있다. 이에 따라 올해의 최우수 영화 중 하나가 될 몇몇 영화들에도 초점이 맞춰지고 있다.

<보이후드>와 <사랑에 대한 모든 것>은 치열한 경쟁 중이고, <나를 찾아줘>와 <그랜드 부다페스트 호텔>, <인터스텔라>는 수많은 지지에도 불구하고, 결코 최종명단에 들어갈 것이라 장담할 순 없다.

모션 픽쳐 아트 앤 사이언스의 투표자들은 5개에서 10개 후보작까지 어디에든 투표할 수 있다. 이들은 지난 3년동안 9개의 영화를 선택했다. 하지만 이 분야의 자연스러운 특성상, 설령 이들이 10개의 모든 영화를 택한다고 해도 별로 놀랄 만한 일은 아니다.

12월 8일 AFI 어워드의 발표는 2014년 가장 마음에 든 영화 11편을 축하함으로써 경쟁작들의 시기적절한 얼개를 제공했다. 물론, IFC 필름의 <보이후드>도 그 중 하나였으며, <아메리칸 스나이퍼>와 <버드맨>, <여우사냥꾼>, <이미테이션 게임>, <인터스텔라>, <숲 속으로>, <나이트 크롤러>, <셀마>, <언브로큰>, <위플래쉬>도 있었다.

<사랑에 대한 모든 것>은 비미국 영화기 때문에 AFI의 선정작에서 제외되었다. 비록 워킹 타이틀 드라마는 오스카 영화제를 의식해 반드시 두드러지려고 할 것이지만 말이다. 만약 1월 15일 오스카 영화제에서 이 영화와 <보이 후드>가 명단에 있지 않다면 정말 어이가 없을 것이다. 훌륭한 연기를 보여준 배우들과, 심오했던 영화 둘 다 말이다.

네 편의 이번 시즌의 영미권 영화 중 두 편 <보이 후드>와 <사랑에 대한 모든 것>, 그리고 나머지는 <나를 찾아줘>와 <위플래쉬>다.

볼드 필름작 다미엔 차젤레 감독의 <위플래쉬>는 SPC를 통해 미국에서 개봉했으며, 모든 사람들에게 가치가 있다. 게다가 이 영화의 본질적인 장점은, 아카데미가 미국의 떠오르는 재능을 지지할 아량이 넓다는 점이다. (벤 제틀린 감독의 비스트를 기억하는가?) <위플래쉬>는 분명 최종 명단에 들 것이다.

그렇다면 <나를 찾아줘>는? 다시 생각해볼 것도 없다.

노미네이션될 가능성이 있는 다른 경쟁작들로는, 블랙베어 픽쳐스와 웨인스타인 컴퍼니의 <이미테이션 게임>이 오스카 특유의 감성과, 강력한 지지, 하비 웨인스타인의 작품, 그리고 베네딕트 컴버배치의 출연으로 승리가 확실하다.
