톰 하퍼 감독의 <우먼인블랙2 : 엔젤 오브 데스> 금요일에 개봉. 런닝타임 1시간 38분.

“The Woman in Black 2: Angel of Death" leaves behind the Edwardian setting of its predecessor for 1941. With the Blitz in progress, a group of children evacuates London for what turns out to be an even more dangerous destination. The building designated as their makeshift school is the Eel Marsh House, which, as in the first film, is haunted by a ghost whose specialty is killing children.

<우먼인블랙2 : 엔젤 오브 데스>는 1941년 이들의 조상인 에드워드 시대풍의 영화로, 전쟁 중 맹공습 때문에 런던으로 몸을 피한 아이들이 오히려 훨씬 더 위험한 저택에 도착해 겪게 되는 이야기다. 임시학교로 만들어진 저택 '일 마쉬'는 아이들을 죽이는 원혼이 출몰하는 곳이다.

Word of this specter’s vendetta against the young apparently hasn’t reached this generation. The original movie’s star, Daniel Radcliffe, has likewise vanished, along with much of the promise once heralded by the logo of Hammer Films, a former workhorse of British horror.

어린 아이들에게 피의 복수를 하는 이 원혼의 목소리는 아이들에겐 들리지 않는다. 1편의 주인공인 다니엘 레드클리프는 포스터에 있던 해머필름의 문구대로 이 영국 호러영화의 이전 무대에서 사라졌다. (의역입니다. 제대로 풀어쓰자면 1편에 나왔던 다니엘 레드클리프가 더 이상 나오지 않는다는 의미인듯. 참고로 우먼인블랙 포스터 문구는 "아이들이 사라졌다!"입니다)

Still, “The Woman in Black 2” begins with surprising elegance. The students, escorted by Eve (Phoebe Fox) and Jean (Helen McCrory), arrive in the emptied-out village of Crythin Gifford. Shrouded in what may well be a permanent fog — eerily relayed in a near-monochromatic, blue-tinged palette, unpierced by headlights (which might attract bombers) — the area looks haunted before the ghost appears.

<우먼인블랙2>는 놀랍도록 고상한 분위기에서 시작한다. 이브(피비 폭스)와 진(헬렌 맥크로리)에게 보호받는 학생들은 Crythin Gifford라는 텅빈 도시에 도착한다. 거의 무채색에 가깝게 창백하고, 불빛도 통하지 않는 불가사의한 안개(폭격기도 위험할 수 있는)가 장막처럼 끝없이 펼쳐져 있는 이 도시는 원혼이 나타나기 전에 이미 폐허같다.

For the characters, the woman in black may function as a kind of proxy for the war: In her presence, death is unavoidable. But the director, Tom Harper, seems less interested in allegory than in monotonous, conventional goosing, the kind that involves flickering lights and a creaky rocking chair. BEN KENIGSBERG

아이들에게 있어서, 어둠 속의 여인은 전쟁을 상징하는 존재일지도 모른다. 그녀와 얼굴을 마주하는 사람은 결코 죽음을 피할 수 없다. 하지만 톰 하퍼 감독은 이러한 상징에 대해, 깜박이는 전등이나 삐걱거리는 흔들의자 같은 틀에 박힌 장치보다 관심이 없어 보인다. (의역. goosing을 어떻게 해석해야할지 몰라서 장치로 해석) 벤 케니스버그.
